Opposition parties have accused the Elections Commission of the Maldives of trying to obtain information about the structures of opposition parties and handing it over to ruling party PPM.

In a press conference held at Kunooz by the opposition parties today, SG of JP Ahmed Sameer said that there is no reason why the Elections Commission should request the parties for information regarding regional branches of parties.

He said that the EC legislation does not give them this power. He said that even though the EC has been saying that they are meeting political parties to obtain information about this year’s election the letter sent to the parties by EC does not say anything in this regard. He said that the letters sent by EC requests for information which they cannot request for legally.

Sameer said that the opposition parties have informed EC that they will not meet EC to give this information.
