Today senior figures of Maldivian opposition parties tried to meet with senior officials of Maldives Correctional Service. However, they refused to meet them.

Speaking to the press after attempting to meet the management of Maldives Correctional Service, Ali Zahir the VP of Adhalath Party said that they tried to meet them because families of prisoners keep complaining about torture in jail. He said that it is not a solution for the management of corrections to hide inside their rooms.

Ali Zahir said that if the prisoners are being treated in accordance with the law, then there is no reason for them not to meet with the opposition. He said that no matter what, all prisoners should be treated in accordance with the law and in accordance with the treaties signed by Maldives.

Deputy leader of JP Dr.Hussein Rasheed said that they tried to meet Commissioner of Prisons because families of prisoners expressed concern about how they are being treated in jail. He said that hence it is the duty of the opposition to find a solution to this problem.

“Especially political leaders and many others who were arrested under SOE are being tortured and hence we should try to find a solution” said Dr.Hussein.
He said that the opposition will not stop their work to attain justice and they will continue their work until peace and stability is established in Maldives.
