Bestbuy Maldives (BBM) together with Maldives Exhibition and Conference Services (MECS) has hosted the 6th Masterclass and Barista workshop at Hulhulé Island Hotel. The session – held in preparation for Hotel Asia 2018 – was conducted and guided by Chef Garth Shnier, Complex Executive Chef of Sun International; and Chef Ronald Prasanto, Executive Chef of Arrack & Spice. A total of 150 chefs from the hospitality industry took part in the session.

Chef Garth Shnier, throughout his 32-year career, has trained chefs and worked in raising the standards in the industry aligning South Africa to global culinary standards. In the Masterclass, Chef Shnier took the participants through the process of preparing for an international competition, from psychologically preparing oneself to how to plate the dish.

Chef Ronald Prasanto demonstrated the technique of molecular gastronomy in preparing coffee and desserts. This technique uses the scientific application to create fresh desserts made to order with techniques such as instant freeze with the use of liquid nitrogen to make some of the desserts.

Additionally, he shared his experience on molecular gastronomy which is still a new trend across Asia and one of the fastest growing culinary experiences which are expected to continue for the next decade.
“The 6th Master Class event organized by BBM was a top shelf workshop. This event was saturated with high caliber chefs who shared their extensive knowledge in their respective fields. We have been spoilt with great hospitality and professional organization. If you've missed this year’s evening then you've missed a great event. Everything from start to finish was well executed. Thank you to BBM for the invitation and investing in the hospitality industry in the Maldives. My team and I have returned with renewed passion and will implement what has been shown.” Says Gabriel Le Roux, Executive chef of Constance Halaveli who participated in the Masterclass.

BBM, the Main Sponsor of Hotel Asia 2018 and leading resort supplier in the Maldives, along with MECS have jointly conducted many such training programmes for different sectors in the hospitality industry of Maldives. This year, three Maldivian pastry chefs are hosted as “Team Maldives” to participate in the Asian Pastry Cup 2018, which is scheduled to be held from April 24-25 in Singapore.

“We at BBM truly believe that with the right training and knowledge, the chefs local to the Maldives could reach the highest pinnacle of the Global Culinary Industry,” says Mohamed Mazloom, Director/CEO of BBM.

The Masterclass also saw the launch of the Hotel Asia International Culinary Challenge 2018. The culinary competition will feature 23 individual and team competitions September 9-12. For more information, please visit bb-mld.com.
