Managing Director of STO Ahmed Shaheer have said that price of staple food items will not increase in Maldives even if India slashed down the export quota to Maldives.

He said that since STO did not receive the official decision of the Indian authorities, he cannot comment on it but he is sure that this will not increase the price of these products in Maldives.

Even now, Maldives import flour and sugar from other countries because it is too expensive to import from India. As for rice, Maldivians used to import rice from Burma but later it was imported from India. Since now there is no trade restrictions with Myanmar it will not be difficult to start importing from Myanmar.

Hence it is unlikely that the price of staple food items will increase in Maldives. However there might be price hikes from products such as onions, curry powder, potatoes and eggs as the freight cost will be higher if imported from another country.
