With the arrival of the famous R&B superstar Akon many of his fans begun to celebrate his arrival and welcome him. They also have criticized religious scholars for speaking against the show.

In this regard, cartoons have been made depicting Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

Akon’s arrival to Maldives to perform in the show was revealed by a video aired during the Tourism Countdown Show held on New Year’s eve.

Akon’s show is scheduled to be held on 8th of this month at the Galolhu Football stadium. The show will be open for all.

Akon arrived in Maldives while Adhaalath Party claimed that they will do everything they can to stop the show.

Akon was scheduled to arrive in Maldives to perform in a music show in the year 2010 as well but with the opposition from the religious scholars and some politicians the show was cancelled.

The government stated that Akon’s previous show was cancelled due to technical problems.

R&B star Akon was also refused a Sri Lankan visa after one of his music videos spurred violent protests in the nation's capital.

Hundreds of people stormed the headquarters of Colombo's Maharaja television network on Monday, protesting a forthcoming gig by Akon. Demonstrators threw stones, with four workers injured and several cars smashed, according to the BBC. The Sri Lankan government subsequently denied the Senegalese-born singer's visa request, citing his "controversial video images, offensive song lyrics and strong protests coming from various cultural, religious groups and organisations in the country".

Akon's promoters formally cancelled the 20 April concert, but say they are hoping to reschedule once the "situation [has been] resolved".

In April 2007, Akon drew criticism for an onstage act which included simulated sex with a 15-year-old girl, at a club in Trinidad and Tobago, as part of a fake contest, despite the club's claim to have a 21 years and over age requirement. The incident was filmed by Akon's crew and later uploaded to the Internet. On April 20, 2007 local media, channel TV6, aired the video clip publicly. Amid criticism on the radio, television, and from the blogosphere, Verizon Wireless removed ringtones featuring Akon's songs.
