Former State Minister, Sheikh Mohamed Didi has said that the Islamic Ministry is a bait on the hook of the government to lure the people.

Sheikh Mohamed Didi made this remark speaking at last night’s rally held at Artificial Beach by “Maldivians against tyranny” movement.

He said that the government is interfering with the ministry and causing undue political influence on the ministry. He said that this is even evident from the Friday sermons written by the ministry.

“There is much to be exposed. There is much to be told. But will do when the time is right,” he said.

Sheikh Mohamed Didi said that the current government does not want to foster Islamic awareness in the country although they claim otherwise.

In addition to this, Sheikh Mohamed Didi said that the government wants to intimidate the people who stand against the government tyranny but the government will not succeed.

Meanwhile, Detainees, lawyers and families of detainees from May Day protest have reported of police brutality and abuse during and after arrest on 1 May.

Police arrested 195 people, including minors, and the leaders of all the main opposition parties.

MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrahim were all arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, following a court order alleging them of attempting to overthrow the government.

The crackdown by the Yameen regime constitutes one of the biggest mass arrests in the Maldives’ history.

An estimated 25,000 people poured onto the streets of Male’ on Friday afternoon, demanding an end to government tyranny and the release of political prisoners

The three political parties put aside their differences and joined forces earlier this year, in response to a wave of anti-democratic actions by the Yameen regime, including the firing of the country’s Chief Justice, harassment of the Elections Commission, and jailing of opposition politicians.
