Finance Minister Abdulla Jihad has said that there are no restraints to grant MVR 3000 as Ramadan Allowance of the Peoples’ Majlis passes it.

He said that the contingency budget has enough to grant all employees MVR 3000 for Ramadan.

Minister Jihad made this remark following the remarks of PPM Parliamentary Group Leader Ahmed Nihan on the media that PPM is discussing to submit to give MVR 3000 as Ramadan allowance for all to make all employees equal and to give that amount the state needs additional MVR 36 million.

According to the the Second Amendment Bill to the Employment Act that was passed by the People’s Majlis on 2 August 2010, every Muslim employee is entitled to an allowance no less than one third of the monthly salary, payable before the beginning of Ramadan. However, the Act states that a minimum of Rf 2,000 shall be given while the maximum amount will be Rf 10,000.

Jihad stated that should the Majlis seek to initiate work on such a move, then they should wrap work on the Bill within the first week of June, when Parliament reconvenes after their recess.
