President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has called on all to cease stabbings and murders or risk facing the death penalty.

Speaking in the ceremony held to lay the ground work for the 25 storey National Diagnostic Center for IGMH, President Yameen said death penalty will be passed on those who commit murders. He said if the citizens did not wish to earn the death penalty, then they should refrain from committing murders.

President Yameen said the Supreme Court will finalize a decision on the death penalty cases within the judicial justice system. He also revealed that the hearings of murder cases will soon begin in Criminal Court as well.

“Major crimes such as murders will be halted once the judicial processes are completed and the sentence implemented. Government, Police and judiciary are working to prevent crime,” he said.
He said the Maldivians were greeting Ramadan at a very sad time.

“Two children were murdered yesterday. This is a very sad situation, murder of any individual is a sad situation,”

Even tonight, President Yameen stressed that the Government did not wish to enact punishment. However, he noted that crime can only be stopped by enacting the set measures, adding that this had been proven over time.
