The largest annual run in the Maldives, Dhiraagu Road Race is to be held in Hulhumale’ this year.

Dhiraagu says that this year’s road race will be held on 11th November, the republic day of Maldives. Dhiraagu has opened up the application for those who want to participate in the race, starting from today till 1st November. This was announced at an event held at Dhiraagu head office today.

This race is the only race held in Maldives, which is endorsed by the Association of International Marathon and Distant races. This race will provide an opportunity for Maldivian athletes to compete with foreign athletes.

Promoting children’s rights is a key focus area of Dhiraagu under their cooperate social responsibility program. Hence, this year’s slogan for the race is protecting children and preventing cruelties against children.

The race has been held for 10 consecutive years now. According to Dhiraagu 3000 athletes can participate in this year’s event. In addition, there will be a 5km and a 10km category. The marketing and PR manager of Dhiraagu Mirshan said that he expects lot of Maldivians and foreigners to take part in the race. He also noted that the race is being held with cooperation from HDC. The HR director of HDC Ahmed Faathih said that, conducting the race at Hulhumale’ is an honor for them and they will always assist in such programs.

This year also some selected NGOs working towards promoting children’s rights and child protection will get funding from Dhiraagu. Among the selected NGOs, participants of the race will vote and select 5 NGOs which will receive 40000 Rufiyaa from Dhiraagu. In addition, the NGOs will also receive the money from auctioning off the jerseys of the athletes. The purpose of this is to make the NGOs more sustainable.

There will be two categories in this year’s race. Each category will have and open, 45 and above and a student sub category. But there will be some age requirements in both the categories for school students. Those students who want to participate in the 5km category should be 7 years or older. Those who want to participate in the 10km category should be 16 or older.
