A delegation of high-ranking officials of Bangladesh Prison Department has today met the Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Shihan at the Head Office of Maldives Correctional Service (MCS).
The Bangladeshi delegation include Deputy Inspector General of Prisons AshimKanta Paul, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons MdNurun Nabi Bhuiyan, Jailor A.K.A.M. Masum, Jailor Md Abu Talib, Deputy Director Mr Mohammad Mamun of Divisional Intelligence Office, Department of Narcotics Control and Deputy Secretary Mr MD Abdul Kadir of Security Services Division, Ministry of Home Affairs.

The meeting was also joined by few commissioned officers of MCS.

The delegation from Bangladesh Prison Department shared information regarding the Bangladeshi prison system and inquired much information about the Maldivian prison system, how sentencing is carried out under the penal system of Maldives, the types of sentences and the basic services and privileges provided to those incarcerated.

While addressing the queries of the visiting delegation, CP Shihan stated that in regards to Bangladesh; Maldives is very small country and about 90 percent of current prisoners are drug abusers. He stated that in order to reform inmates, rehabilitation programmes and allowance-based employment opportunities are also provided at the prisons. CP also said that parole and clemency opportunities are also availed to those who meet the necessary requirements.

Additionally, CP Shihan said that Institute for Correctional Studies conducts several courses accredited by the Maldives Qualification Authority to develop skills and capabilities of prison officers.
The delegation from Bangladesh Prison Department is visiting Maldives at the invitation of Maldives Correctional Service as part of its efforts to foster better relations with the former. The delegation is also scheduled to visit and see the operations of the Maldivian prisons.
