Leader of JP, Qasim Ibrahim have said that it is a shameful act to accuse former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom of corruption and that he does not believe that Maumoon would commit any act of corruption.

Expressing concerns after ACC demanded to question Maumoon regarding the audit reports of Theemuge (the former presidential palace) Qasim said that 90 percent of the people believe that Maumoon would not steal from the nation. He said that so far nothing of that sort has been seen from Maumoon.

“When Maumoon returned back from studies, even I was living in Endherimaage. I did not see anything of that sort even then. I was his finance minister and the governor of the central bank for a while. Never saw anything of that sort from Maumoon” said Qasim while speaking to online news Mihaaru.

“President Maumon is very sincere, loyal and a trustworthy person. I am not saying that there might not be an issue where he might have to be questioned. Only the relevant institutions will know this. But what I know for sure is that we will not find any corrupt acts from Maumoon. I am saying this based on my experience” said Qasim.

Qasim who is working with Maumoon politically at the moment, said that we should be happy that no corrupt acts can be seen from Maumoon despite the fact that under the previous constitution the president had lots of authority.

“When he assumed office for the first time Maldives had a budget of 30 million Rufiyaa. When he left office, the budget was 12.3 billion Rufiyaa. He brought development in all sectors. He developed the tourism sector immensely. So, accusing someone like him of being corrupt is not something that I will accept. I will be ashamed to do so” said Qasim.
