Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that the Maldivians who went to Syrian “civil war” should not be detained and given harsh punishments.

Dr. Shaheem said that those youth should be brought back and rehabilitated and given job opportunities.

“I do not believe that such youth should be subjected to harsh punishments. We should do as in other Islamic countries. They should be rehabilitated. Knowledge based programs should be held,” he said.

Dr. Shaheem said that this is what he believes in but as for the final decision then it is upon the respected authorities.

He said that this matter will be discussed in the cabinet and he assured that a good and just decision will be made regarding this matter.

Dr. Shaheem also called yesterday to not to enter into the civil wars that are happening in Syria and other countries.

He said that the Syrian opposition leader also does not want any foreigners to be involved in the fighting.
