Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has called the government to solve the problems related to Villa Group without damaging the tourism industry.

MATATO issued a statement raising concerns, when Police and Customs conducted operations on 5 resorts of Villa, while they were fully booked.

The statement says that all parties should obey laws and regulations but it is important to solve problems related to the tourism industry through dialogue at first. Especially if there are tourists in the resort at the time. He said that it is the responsibility of all parties involved to solve such problems in a way that it will not damage the tourism industry.

In addition, they further stated that they have not received clear information about the case, but based on media reports it will not be a good message for the tourists who have booked resorts in the Maldives.

MATATO requested to find an adequate solution to the problem. They noted that the tourism industry shared 75 percent of the Maldivian economy and if there are negative impacts on the industry, it will affect many other areas as well.

MATATO also stated that they support the policies of the government in promoting Maldives and providing job opportunities for Maldivians in the tourism sector.
