Government have reduced the electricity prices all over the country for usage up to 400 units. The change will come into effect starting from March.
With this change, RF 75 will be reduced from the first 100 units and 400 Rufiyaa will be reduced from each household up to 400 units.
Speaking to the press, environment minister said that with this change, all the islands will be charged at the same rate as Male’. He said that the differences in price between Male’ and the atolls was a huge problem for everyone but today it has been solved.
In addition he said that if the utility companies faces loss because of this change, the government will provide subsidy to the companies. “This is related to many other factors. We are trying to make sure that 30 percent of the day time electricity in all islands come from renewable sources. As a result amount of fuel burned will be less” said the minister.
He said that even though the price of oil is rising in the world market, the government wants to make things easier for the people. “We will closely monitor the losses faced by the companies and then we will manage how to compensate” said the minister.
