Elecen Chinese navy ships sailed into the East Indian Ocean according to a Chinese news portal. Meanwhile, the Maldives is going under a constitutional crisis and is currently in a state of emergency.

The Chinese fleet has one frigate, 30,000 tone amphibious transport dock, three supply tankers and destroyers. The Chinese news portal did not say when the fleet was deployed or for how long.

Experts say that a cold war is brewing in the Indian ocean between China and India, two old foes. India is worried about the increased Chinese presence in the Maldives. Especially the recent free trade agreement signed between Maldives and China came as a surprise to Indian officials.

Meanwhile, officials of Maldivian opposition parties have asked the Indian government to intervene to bring an end to the constitutional deadlock in the Maldives. So far India has not shown any sign of intervention but asked all parties to respect rule of law.

At the moment, the government is trying to extend the state of emergency which was announced on 5th February which will expire sometime today.
