Parliament of the Maldives has extended the state of emergency in Maldives by 30 days.
The vote was passed with votes of 38 members who were present in the parliament chamber. The national security committee of the parliament brought some amendments to the president’s declaration. The articles which suspends some powers of the parliament and the Supreme Court were removed from the declaration.
While speaking at the session, the speaker of the parliament, Abdullah Maseeh said that the constitution does not require 43 members of the parliament to be present in the chamber to pass a declaration on state of emergency. However, the parliament passed to send the matter to the Supreme Court to make a final decision.
MP Ali Arif and MP Abdullah Abduh Raheem spoke during today’s session for around a minute. No other members spoke in today’s session. The speaker of the parliament announced that they are starting the session with 37 members but at the end said that there were 40 members. Yesterday’s session was held with 39 members.
No opposition members took part in the session and the 12 members who were previously unseated by the Elections Commission were not allowed into today’s session.
Deputy Leader of PPM Abdullah Abduh Raheem said that even though they do not have 43 MPs they will extend the state of emergency as requested by the president.
