Deputy Spokesperson of UN Secretory General Farhan Haqq have said that President Abdullah Yameen did not accept the United Nation’s offer to act as a mediator between the government and the opposition parties regarding the ongoing political crisis in Maldives.

Opposition parties said that they do not want to communicate directly with the government and that they will only hold talks if an international organization such as the UN mediates it. Meanwhile, PPM the ruling party stated that they will not take part in any talks with foreigners involved.

UN decided to offer to act as a meditator when the opposition requested the UN Secretory General for help. The UN SG accepted the offer within three days after the opposition sent a letter.

Meanwhile the government keeps saying that they want to hold talks with the opposition but they do not want to accept any conditions set by the opposition. Hence, the opposition says that the government does not have any intention of holding talks but they are just using it to cover up the oppressive and corrupt acts of the government.
