Fisheries Minister Dr.Shainee have said that the government of Maldives did not reject UN’s offer to take part in talks as a mediator between the government and the opposition parties.

Dr.Shainee said this after various medias reported the deputy spokesperson of UN SG saying that the Maldives rejected UN’s offer to mediate. Dr.Shainee tweeted saying that it was President Yameen who requested UN to act as a mediator in the first place. In addition he said that the government requested UN to be a meditator and that UN accepted the government’s requests.

Minister Shainee said that there are delays in starting the talks because the opposition has no interest to talk with the government and because of the pre-conditions they are setting.

However, in a recent press conference held by PPM, the Deputy Leader of PPM Abdullah Abdul Raheem has repeatedly confirmed that PPM will not take part in the dialogues if any foreigners act as mediators. He made this statement after the opposition sent a letter to the UN requesting to be a mediator.
