Parliament repeals the anti-defamation act

Parliament of the Maldives has repealed the anti-defamation act. Thirty eight members voted to repeal the act while 13 members voted against repealing.

 

The motion to repeal the act was submitted by MP Abdullah Shahid. He said that the purpose of the legislation was to prevent the media from talking about the corruption and the criminal activities of President Yameen’s regime.

 

Shaahid said that only dictators hinder free press to hide their crimes. He said that today it can be seen that the president-elect Solih will not do things like that. He further said that because of the anti-defamation act many media organizations were fined up to millions and journalists were arrested. He said that today all those things come to an end.

 

In addition he said that if President Yameen does not ratify the parliament’s decision, the president-elect will do it on his first day on the job.
