President of the Election’s Commission of the Maldives Ahmed Shareef has stated that he will step down from the position after the local council elections.

He made this statement while speaking to the state media. He said that he believes that he has fulfilled his responsibilities as president, and he will resign from the position after the local council elections that will be held in early 2020. 

Shareef said that he decided to resign from the position because he cannot take part in political activities and he would like to be active in politics. 

Previously Shareef was a member of the parliament, an atoll chief and the MD of Fenaka as well.
