It is not today that China started assisting Maldives. It was China which developed the sewage system of Maldives. That was in 1980s and hence history should not be forgotten.
It was China which developed Male’ Hiya flats and Hulhumale’ phase 1 flats as well. Buildings such as National Library, Foreign Ministry building and national museum were all built with Chinese assistance. Even Laamu Link project was conducted by China. All these projects were conducted free of charge.
China is conducting various development projects all over the world. Hence projects like bridge, residential buildings and airport are conducted through loan aids. These loans have a long grace period and low interest rate.
Speaking about the current situation of Maldives, China called all parties to engage in dialogue to find a solution and assured their help if needed. China stated that China wants Maldives to find homegrown solutions. Majority of the tourists to Maldives are now from China. It is been the 7th consecutive year since China has been in this sport.
Since China has huge investments in Maldives and since thousands of Chinese tourists visit Maldives every year it is in the best interest of China for Maldives to be stable.
Chinese assistance to Maldives did not begin recently !
