Maldivians abolished the monarchy for the first time in 1st January 1953. The first republic ended in the same year on 21st August.
That republic was ended from the streets by mobs. The then President Mohammed Ameen was removed from his position by force. The second monarchy which was established after that was brought to an end by Ibrahim Nasir when he was the Prime Minister. Ibrahim Nasir assumed the position on 12th December 1957. He took the oath of office as the first president of the second republic on 11th November 1968.
After he completed two 5-year terms, he resigned on 11th November 1978. To establish the republic, President Nasir held a referendum to see whether people preferred a monarchy or a republican system. The monarchy was abolished when people voted in favor of a republic system.
