Speaker of the Parliament, Qasim Ibrahim have said that a republican system of government is a people’s government and all the power lies with the people in such a system.
Qasim said that even though the first republic of Maldives ended within a few days, the second republic is celebrating the 50th anniversary and hence it shows that the people wants this system. He said that the people will never want a monarchy and accept it. He said that there are very few monarchies in the world and even those countries are in the verge of revolution.
He said that he is sure that the president-elect who will assume office on 17th November will govern the country as desired by the people.
Qasim wished all Maldivians on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the republic of Maldives.
It should be noted, that the people started fully enjoying the benefit of this system when the new constitution was drafted and ratified. Qasim Ibrahim was the speaker of the assembly which drafted the constitution.
Since the beginning of reform movements in 1980, Qasim has made many sacrifices for a system where the three branches of the state are separate. He said that he will remain in this work till the people enjoy the full benefits of the work started by him.
