Tears of happiness as the apex court acquits President Nasheed

The Supreme Court of the Maldives has acquitted former President Nasheed of terrorism charges. HE was sentenced to 13 years in jail in 2015 and the Supreme Court of the Maldives made a historic decision to overturn that verdict.

Upon the pronouncement of the verdict, supporters of the former President who were waiting outside the Supreme Court were moved to tears. Many were seeing embracing President Nasheed and crying.

President Nasheed is the most popular politician in the Maldives. Many have been saying that he was sentenced to jail unjustly and even if Justice Abdullah Didi was arrested like that, the former president should not have been sentenced to jail for such a lengthy period.

While the court case was going on, the former PG Muhuthaaz withdrew the case and filed charges again. The second time he was charged for terrorism and many believed that President Yameen used his influence to change the charges. At the time JP’s leader Qasim Ibrahim raised concerns after the charges were filed.

Many believe that President Yameen turned on Qasim Ibrahim because of that.
