Special committee formed to revise the agreements made by the previous administration

Attorney General’s office has formed a special committee to revise the agreements made by the previous administration which endangers the sovereignty of Maldives.

A statement issued by the AG’s office today, states that the committee will work with relevant authorities to renegotiate the agreements. However no other details of the committee was revealed. According to the statement, the agreements they are reviewing includes loans, public service agreements, tourism sector related agreements and sovereign guarantee agreements.

AG office stated that they will check whether the agreements were concluded in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations. “If agreements were signed in a way that will undermine the sovereignty of Maldives, it will be analyzed to see whether it can be renegotiated, and it will be revised” says the statement. According to Finance Ministry the previous administration borrowed 3.7 billion dollars as loans and out of that 1.4 billion was borrowed from China
