Today is the day the government officially adopted the name, Republic of Maldives.
Previously the official name of Maldives was Maldive Islands.
The then external affairs minister of Maldives, Ahmed Zaki issued a statement on this day in 1969 stating that starting from that day onwards Maldive Islands will be known as Republic of Maldives.
