Fisheries Minister Zaha Waheed has met with fishermen from Addu. The minister met with fishermen from all the Addu and shared the policies of the government with the fishermen.
Mayor of Addu City Abdullah Sodhig and the acting MD of MIFCO Ismail Fauzee took part in the meeting with Minister Zaha.
Speaking at the meeting Mayor Sodhiq talked about the challenges faced by fishermen and noted that the fisheries ministry is working closely with the council to solve these challenges.
Minister Zaha stated that the government is working with the Bank of Maldives to create a special account for fishermen at the bank. She said that, money will be deposited to the account once the fish is sold to MIFCO. In addition she said that the boat owners can also deposit money to the fishermen through the account. She said that this will open new opportunities such as loan facilities and will allow fishermen to take part in the national pension scheme.
The minister said that she hopes to work closely with the fishermen in future.
