People’s Progress Party of the Maldives and People’s National Congress has formed a coalition.
In a ceremony held tonight, leaders of both the parties signed an agreement to work together. President Yameen, the president of PPM signed the coalition on behalf of PPM and MP Abduh Raheem the President of PNC signed the agreement on behalf of PNC.
The parties announced that they intend to compete in the upcoming parliamentary elections as a coalition. Party tickets were given to some members tonight to compete in the coalition. They also stated that a joint-party primary will be held for some of the constituencies within the next week.
PNC was formed by supporters of President Yameen, fearing that the Supreme Court might handover PPM to former President Maumoon. However, last week the Supreme Court ruled that the extra ordinary congress of PPM was valid and the Elections Commission recognized President Yameen as the party’s leader.
