Maldivian Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO)’s managing director Ismail Fauzy has stated that they will try to increase the capacity of Felivaru canning factory.
Speaking at a ceremony held at Felivaru to mark the 41st anniversary of Felivaru, Ismail said that they plan to increase the capacity of the cannery so that the cannery can process up to 50 tons of fish.
“The infrastructure of the company has to be upgraded and the staffs have to be trained” said Ismail.
In addition he noted that the fisheries industry is a very competitive industry and hence the work of MIFCO and Felivaru should be upgraded to better compete in the market.
Felivaru was opened on 3rd February 1978 was a major source of foreign currency to the Maldives in those years.
The factory was opened with 70 staffs, but now has more than 400 staffs of which majority are Maldivians.
