Former President Maumoon has said that the President Yameen’s government announced a state of emergency on 5th February 2018 for the sole purpose of arresting him and others.
President Maumoon stated he was arrested without any legal grounds. He also called to investigate the matter and take legal action against all those who are responsible for that in order to prevent such politically motivated and unlawful actions.
On 1st February 2018, the Supreme Court of the Maldives issued a verdict calling to free various politicians who were in jail. 5 days after the verdict, the government announced a state of emergency and arrested two justices of the Supreme Court along with former President Maumoon and his son in law.
