Former President Mohammed Nasheed have stated that the Supreme Court cannot extend the application period to apply as a candidate for the parliamentary elections.
He said that the biggest reason why the people lose trust in the courts is because they influence the elections.
Today, Supreme Court issued a verdict stating that candidates who contest in party primaries and then lose are free to contest as independent candidates. Also, even though the deadline to apply for candidacy has passed, the court has ordered the Elections Commission to accept applications from such candidates.
President Nasheed describes this verdict of the Supreme Court as meddling in the elections and said that the Supreme Court cannot do it.
