Home Ministry has closed the Annex 1 of Male’ Jail because the jail is not in the right condition to keep humans.
According to Maldives Correctional Service, the cells in the jail lacks ventilation and they are like metal cages and hence it is very warm inside.
Annex 1 was used as a remand jail previously. According to MCS, it will be reopened after renovations which will meet international standards.
Home Minister Imran has asked the Correctional Service to renovate all jails and holding facilities which does not meet a certain criteria.
