Criminal Court has fined a mother for begging on the streets with a baby and taken custody of the baby.
The mother was begging in the market area with the 2 year old baby. Gender Ministry advised her on several occasions, and she refused to stop it and hence the state charged her for breaking the law.
In the preliminary hearing the mother confessed to the charges. She has two more children in addition to the baby and she gets social security allowances given to single parents by the state. She apologized for her crime and requested not to jail her and asked to fine her instead.
She stated that if she is jailed, there will be no one else to take care of her other children. She is also trying to win back custody of the 2 year old baby who was taken by the state.
