Retail shops in Male’ has increased the price of Lactogen, a popular brand of milk given to infants.
Previously one packet of Lactogen costs MVR 80, however it has now been increased to MVR 125.
The retail price in Sri Lanka for this milk is Rs 580, which is around MVR 50.88. Hence, the retail price of Lactogen is now 150% more expensive than Sri Lanka.
According to sources, the price increased after MHA the sole importer of the product faced some difficulties in importing due to changes in regulations brought by the Health Protection Agency. As a result MH has run out of stock in its inventory.
Even though there are various types of milk for infants, majority of the people uses Lactogen.
Miadhu News has learnt that most of the milk products for infants will now have to be imported to Maldives illegally as the companies which produce these products cannot pack them as required by HPA. As the market of Maldives is small, these companies cannot package it specially just for Maldives.
