Maldives is among the 6 countries which voted in favor of keeping Chagos Island with the UK.
Chagos Island is an archipelago south of Addu City and is currently owned by the United Kingdom.
After the International Court of Justice gave an advisory opinion stating that the island should be handed back over to the Mauritius the United Nations General Assembly took a vote regarding the matter.
A total of 116 countries voted in favor of handing back over the island to Mauritius while Israel, Maldives, UK, Australia, USA and Hungary voted to keep the island with UK.
The island is currently rented out to USA and is used as a military base. The base was used to attack launched against various countries such as Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan.
