MDP has decided to hold an internal vote to decide the party’s candidate for the speaker of the parliament. The election will be held on the coming Monday among members of the newly elected parliamentary group.
An sms sent to all newly elected members state that the party intends to vote to decide the party’s candidate and details of the procedure will be informed later.
So far six candidates have expressed their interest in running for the position. They are MP Aslam of Hithadhoo north constituency, Hassan Afeef the MP elect for Villifushi constituency, Ali Azim the MP for Central Henveryu Constituency, MP Ibrahim Shareef the MP for Maradhoo constituency and MP Rozainaa the MP for Meedhoo constituency.
Meanwhile former President Nasheed has publicly supported MP Aslam while President Solih has stated that MP elect Afeef is the most suitable person for the position.
The new parliament members will take the oath of office on 28th of May.
