The parliament group of MDP has nominated former President and MP elect Mohammed Nasheed as the speaker of the 19th Majlis and MP Eva Abdullah as his deputy.
The parliament group’s meeting was attended by 64 members. Nasheed was nominated by MP Aslam and at first Nasheed refused. However, MP elect Afeef also nominated Nasheed’s name and then Nasheed made a phone call to someone and then accepted the nomination.
Both Aslam and Afeef said that the divide within party cannot be mended unless Nasheed becomes the speaker. Also they stated that it is the best for the nation as well.
After the meeting, Nasheed said that the parliament will be conducted in accordance with the constitution and that he will ‘protect’ Islam. He also said that he will maintain good relations with President Solih and that he does everything after consulting President Solih. He also said that he never intended to become the speaker before.
With this decision Nasheed will become the first former president to become an MP and the speaker of the parliament
