Prominent lawyer Maumoon Hameedh has been elected as the president of the Maldives Bar Council and former Attorney General Abdullah Muizzu has been elected as the Vice President of the council.
Maumoon contested former AG Husnul Suood and received 267 votes, while Suood got 196 votes. Abdullah Muizzu contested former Civil Court judge Mohammed Haleem.
The voting took place in Male’ and in Addu. There were two boxes in Male’ and one in Addu. As per legal professionals act, the bar council will consist of a president, vice president, the attorney general and 6 executive members. Except the AG, all other members are elected through a vote among the lawyers.
