Parliament members of the ruling MDP has stated that they do not wish to delay the local council elections which is scheduled to be held on 4th April.
Speaking at the parliament today MP Hassan Latheef who is also the chairman of MDP said that voting can be conducted in accordance with WHO standards. He said that it is possible to arrange voting stations in such a way that voters are standing three feet form each other.
In addition he said that Elections Commission will take other measures such as keeping sanitizers near voting booths. MDP’s parliamentary group leader Ali Azim also stated that MDP wants to hold the elections as planned.
MDP’s president and speaker of the parliament Mohammed Nasheed said that the law obliged councils to ensure safe health and that is why it is important to elect new councilors.
