Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed an amendment to their bilateral assistance agreement, obligating an additional $3.2 million to increase current U.S. assistance to Maldives to $25 million.
“With this additional funding, the U.S. will advance joint U.S.-Maldives priorities in climate change and the environment,” said USAID/Maldives Mission Director Reed Aeschliman. “This agreement is a concrete demonstration of the growing partnership we share with the government and people of Maldives.”
This bilateral assistance agreement between the United States and Maldives was first signed on March 12, 2019. To date, the United States has obligated over $25 million in bilateral assistance to Maldives for projects to improve public financial management, strengthen rule of law, support decentralization efforts, protect the environment, and now, adapt to climate change.
USAID partners with the Government of Maldives to strengthen environmental resilience, implement economic and democratic reforms and build a strong and effective civil society. To find out more about USAID’s work, please visit usaid.gov/maldives and follow us on Twitter @USAIDMaldives.
