Pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in partnership with State Trading Organization (STO) and Cancer Society of Maldives has launched a training program for oncology nurses, under the Oncology Nurses Excellence Program(ONE).
The program, launched on 17th April 2025 is aimed at enhancing the quality of care provided to cancer patients, by training special oncology nurses.
According to STO the primary objective of the initiative is to unite experts in the field of cancer treatment who would in- turn conduct workshops and training sessions for oncology nurses.
STO emphasized that the program will acknowledge the vital role oncology nurses play in cancer care and help prepare the Maldives to adapt to advancements in cancer treatment through collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The program is being conducted for oncology nurses at all main hospitals providing oncology services across the Maldives. It will feature four sessions. While two sessions have already been completed, 55 nurses took part in the first and 59 nurses took part in the second.

The official highlighted that, beyond administering care, these nurses also educate patients about their condition and offer vital emotional support.
The official noted that the program is designed to acknowledge the critical role oncology nurses play and to further strengthen their skills and capabilities.
STO affirmed its commitment to raising awareness about cancer within the community and emphasized its dedication to supporting cancer patients in need of treatment.
