The main pillar of the country’s economic independence is Velana International Airport: President

- The New Airport Terminal was declared open by President Muizzu

- In his address President Muizzu highlighted on the important role airport plays in the economy 

 

President Dr Mohamed Muizz has said that the main pillar of the country’s economy is Velana International Airport. The President made the remarks while addressing as Guest of Honor of the ceremony to open the new passenger Terminal of Velana International Airport on Saturday night. He said he decided to speed up the work of the terminal to be able to open on the Independence Day, due to a very special reason. And he noted that economic independence plays a vital role in the sustainability of general independence, and that the main airport makes the highest contribution towards this economic independence. 

Hence, he said the country’s economy is expected to see major improvements with the new opening, and urged all Maldivians to work with a united spirit for the betterment of the country, irrespective of different political thinking. He said the people will achieve many accomplishments as these, if there was a spirit of unity among the people. The President said the New Terminal is only a beginning of such achievements, and the county would experience development at different levels in the days ahead.

In his short address the President thanked all those who worked tirelessly to open the new terminal in time, as well as the Presidents of the two previous governments under whom the project proceeded as well. The president also thanked those who funded the airport project including the Saudi Fund for Development, Kuwait Fund, Abu Dhabi Fund and OPEC Fund.
