Minister of Fisheries & Ocean Resources Mr. Ahmed Shiyam has engaged in talks with a Chinese delegation led by Professor Li Tiegang, Director General of the First Institute of Oceanography, regarding marine geology and oceanographic research.
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Fisheries & Ocean Resources on Thursday was attended by several officials from both sides. Discussions were mainly focused on expanding cooperation in the fields of oceanographic science and technology, research, training, and the exchange of knowledge. In addition, talks were also held on exploring ways to sustainably manage ocean resources in the Maldives.
The First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, is a comprehensive scientific body engaged in both fundamental and applied oceanographic studies, advanced technology development, and public services. The institute is dedicated to advancing marine science and technology while contributing to marine governance, maritime safety, and the growth of the marine economy, and plays a significant role in the national innovation system of science and technology. Its key areas of research include the study of distribution and variability of environmental elements in seas, surrounding oceans and polar regions, marine resources and geological environment, mechanisms and forecasting of marine hazards, ecological and environmental changes, ocean remote sensing and information systems, environmental assessment, protection and regulation, development of marine high technologies, and integrated marine management sciences.
