The Maldives’ largest marine research centre has been officially inaugurated at Jawakara Islands Maldives.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Chief of Defence Force Ibrahim Hilmy, Chairman of Champa Brothers Maldives Pvt Ltd Mohamed Moosa, and senior officials from both the resort and the research centre.
The facility has been established to advance studies on climate change, marine biodiversity, and coral reef health, providing a platform for both local universities and international institutes. Equipped with modern laboratories, quarantine facilities, and classrooms, the centre will also serve as a training hub for research students, offering hands-on experience in marine sciences.
Champa Brothers Chairman Mohamed Moosa emphasised that the initiative reflects the urgent need to balance the rapid growth of the tourism industry with the sustainable management of the Maldives’ fragile ecosystems. He underlined that protecting marine biodiversity and ensuring environmental sustainability is essential for the country’s future.
To coincide with the inauguration, a workshop was launched with the participation of international professors and scientists. This initiative is expected to foster collaboration, strengthen scientific exchange, and enhance the global research potential of the new facility.
