The Maldives is enjoying a strong start to 2025, with international air traffic continuing to climb steadily. According to the latest figures from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), international flight movements rose by five percent in the first seven months of the year, reflecting the nation’s growing connectivity and sustained appeal as a world-class holiday destination.
Between January and July 2025, a total of 10,187 international flights touched down in the country, compared to 9,698 flights during the same period last year. This upward trend comes alongside a surge in visitor arrivals, providing fresh momentum for the Maldives’ vital tourism sector, which remains the backbone of the national economy.
The increase was largely propelled by scheduled airline services, which expanded by 5.5 percent. A total of 9,358 scheduled flights were recorded this year, up from 8,866 in 2024. The figures highlight the confidence of international carriers in the Maldives market, with more airlines strengthening their presence and expanding routes to meet growing passenger demand.
While scheduled flights saw robust growth, general aviation movements — covering charter operations and private jets — registered a slight decline, with 829 flights recorded over the period, compared to 832 last year. Despite this minor dip, the overall outlook for air travel to the Maldives remains strong.
The rise in international air traffic has had a direct and positive impact on tourism. By the end of July, the Maldives welcomed over 1.5 million tourists, representing a 9.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024. This surge in arrivals underscores the Maldives’ enduring popularity as a premier travel destination, renowned for its pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and unique island experiences.
Industry observers note that the steady growth in flight movements also reflects the government’s and tourism industry’s efforts to enhance global connectivity. Initiatives to strengthen partnerships with international airlines, improve airport infrastructure, and diversify source markets are bearing fruit, ensuring the Maldives is well-positioned to accommodate rising visitor numbers in the months ahead.
With global travel demand recovering and airlines expanding their schedules, the Maldives is set to benefit further from these favorable trends, reinforcing its status as one of the most sought-after destinations in the world.
