In a landmark achievement for the Maldives, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has become the first Head of State to visit every inhabited island in the nation — completing the historic journey in a record one year and eleven months.
President Dr Muizzu reached this milestone today with his visit to K. Thulusdhoo, concluding a two-day tour that covered all inhabited islands in Faadhippolhu and three islands in Maale’atholhu.
A New Chapter of Inclusive National Outreach
With today’s visit, President Dr Muizzu has now visited all 187 inhabited islands and cities across the Maldives since assuming office. In addition, he has made second visits to 63 islands, underscoring his hands-on approach to governance.
The last time a sitting Maldivian President visited every inhabited island was 42 years ago, when President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom completed his nationwide tour over a five-year period. Achieving the same feat in just 23 months highlights the Muizzu Administration’s unprecedented pace and strong commitment to equitable development.
Accelerating Development Through Direct Engagement
Throughout his tours, President Dr Muizzu met with Island Councils, Women’s Development Committees (WDCs), and local residents to discuss key priorities and developmental needs. These visits provided a direct platform for dialogue, allowing the President to assess progress, listen to public concerns, and deliver immediate solutions.
Accompanied by Cabinet Ministers and heads of State-Owned Enterprises, the President ensured each island received updates on ongoing and upcoming projects. This approach streamlined inter-agency coordination, reducing bureaucratic delays and enabling faster implementation of development initiatives without the need for island representatives to travel to Malé.
Key Achievements from the Nationwide Tour
- BML ATM services to be available on every inhabited island by the end of this month.
- Resident police services established across all 66 previously underserved islands, fulfilling a major pledge.
- National Identity Card and passport services launched in every atoll.
- Introduction of island-specific projects to enhance essential services, community safety, and social protection.
Translating Promises into Progress
During his visits, President Dr Muizzu inaugurated and launched several housing, education, health, and wellness projects, ensuring that national pledges were converted into visible, local outcomes.
He also took time to personally visit schools, health centres, hospitals, mosques, Islamic Centres, sports facilities, and powerhouses, engaging directly with staff and residents to gain a clear understanding of local service delivery.
A Vision for a Decentralised, Empowered Maldives
President Dr Muizzu’s historic island visits mark a defining chapter in Maldives’ governance, reinforcing his Administration’s commitment to decentralisation and inclusive growth.
By ensuring that every island — regardless of its size or remoteness — is part of the nation’s development journey, the President has demonstrated that no community will be left behind as the Maldives moves toward a more connected and empowered future.
