The Maldivian government has renewed its commitment to the One China Policy, a position it has maintained for decades since establishing diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China in 1972. Under this policy, the Maldives recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government representing all of China, and views Taiwan as an inseparable part of Chinese territory.
The One China Policy is a cornerstone of China’s foreign relations, upheld by countries that recognize Beijing as the central authority of the Chinese state. The Maldives’ continued adherence reflects its respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs—values that have guided its external relations for over half a century.
In its latest statement, the government said the policy aligns with Maldives’ foreign policy framework, which prioritizes peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and international stability. It expressed concern over actions by external parties which, it stated, undermine these principles and interfere in the internal matters of sovereign nations.
Reaffirming its bilateral ties, the Maldives emphasized its commitment to further strengthening cooperation with China. It noted that the partnership is built on trust, shared development goals, and a common interest in maintaining peace and sustainable growth.
