All Airlines Complete Move to New VIA Terminal as Modern Facilities and E-Gates Go Live

All airlines have now been successfully transferred to the newly opened Passenger Terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), marking a major milestone in the airport’s transformation. Following the final transfer today, Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed expressed his gratitude to stakeholders, EXCO members, and staff, commending their dedication and teamwork in achieving this significant accomplishment.

The new terminal, inaugurated on July 26, 2025, represents a major upgrade in the Maldives' aviation infrastructure. With a passenger handling capacity of 7.5 million annually, it significantly expands operations from the previous terminal. Featuring six state-of-the-art aero-bridges, self-check-in kiosks, and automated baggage systems, the new facility is designed to enhance efficiency and provide a more seamless and comfortable travel experience—aligning with the Maldives’ image as a world-class luxury destination.

Modern E-gates were also inaugurated at VIA as part of the President’s pledge to introduce advanced border control systems. The opening ceremony was officiated by chief guest Controller General of Immigration Ahmed Faseeh, with Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen and MACL CEO & Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed in attendance.

The E-gates will streamline immigration procedures, allowing passengers to scan their passports and use facial recognition technology to complete border formalities with ease. Currently, five E-gates each are operational for arrivals and departures, with a total of 20 set to be installed in the new terminal. While the service is now available for locals, plans are underway to extend access to foreign travelers in the first quarter of 2026.

This transition marks a transformative step in modernizing the Maldivian aviation sector and reinforces the nation’s commitment to delivering a superior travel experience for all passengers.
