BCC Announces SME Support to Boost Maldives’ Creative Economy

The Business Center Corporation (BCC) has announced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and developing a skilled creative economy in the Maldives.

BCC Director of Investment and International Relations Mohamed Eman said the corporation plans to establish Creator Hubs in Malé and across the atolls to support local artists, entrepreneurs, and creative professionals. The hubs will provide shared workspaces, equipment, and opportunities for remote work, helping professionals nationwide access resources needed to grow their businesses.

Eman praised the central role of SMEs in the national economy, noting the dedication of Maldivian manufacturers and entrepreneurs. He added that the BCC is engaging artists, industry experts, and stakeholders through consultations and information sessions to shape these initiatives in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for a skilled and diversified economy. The efforts align with Cabinet-endorsed priorities to empower local talent and expand economic opportunities beyond traditional sectors.

In addition to the planned Creator Hubs, the BCC is implementing a broad range of SME support programs. These include the SME Hub in Malé City, which offers low-cost kiosks for businesses to market and sell products, reducing the risks associated with commercial rents. The corporation has also launched the nationwide “Dhivehi Raajjeyge Iqthisaadhee Furamala 2025” initiative to collect comprehensive economic data to better identify SMEs, tailor support services, and attract investment.

Other key programs include the Maldives MSME Awards 2025 to recognize SME achievements, the Authentic Maldives platform that provides market access for over 300 local producers, and SeedbyBCC, a co-working space and support platform that helps entrepreneurs navigate business challenges. The newly introduced Maldives Creative Economy IP Training Project will equip creative entrepreneurs with knowledge to grow and protect their intellectual property.

BCC is further strengthening SMEs through partnerships with organizations such as UNDP, Villa College, and local banks, offering consultations, training in financial literacy and technical skills, and facilitating access to finance. The government has also announced a separate MVR 500 million SME support package for the year.

The BCC stated that supporting businesses across all sectors remains its top priority, with future plans including the establishment of Creator Hubs, a garment factory, and a packaging facility to enhance innovation and economic resilience in the Maldives.
