Muizzu Sends Message of Goodwill as Japan’s Premier Secures Fresh Mandate

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has conveyed his congratulations to Sanae Takaichi following her reappointment as Prime Minister of Japan.

In a formal message, the President stated that the renewed endorsement by Japan’s National Diet demonstrates the strong confidence placed in her leadership and strategic direction for the country’s future.

Looking ahead to 2027, when the Maldives and Japan will commemorate 60 years of diplomatic ties, President Muizzu underscored Japan’s enduring contributions to the Maldives’ socio-economic advancement. He noted that the support extended by the Government of Japan remains highly valued by the Maldivian people.

The President further expressed optimism that Prime Minister Takaichi’s new term would open further avenues for collaboration, strengthening bilateral relations rooted in shared principles and mutual respect, while generating meaningful outcomes for both nations.

Prime Minister Takaichi was formally sworn in again on February 18, 2026, after securing a decisive victory in the February 8 lower house elections. Her party, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), achieved a commanding two-thirds majority — a landmark result that significantly consolidates her political position. Having first assumed office in October 2025 as Japan’s first female prime minister, her renewed mandate marks another historic chapter in Japanese politics.
